"Two Step" - DMB - Song of the Week #9

"Two Step"

This song is the quintessential example of what the Dave Matthews Band is all about. It starts with a pulsing groove strummed by both guitar and violin, and builds fantastically to the full instrumental groove that underlines the song. With a sixteenth feel thanks to Mr. Beauford, it's really a treat to listen to. The horn improv throughout is an added bonus, and a testament to the skillful combination these musician's possess. Dave gives us a beautifully written melody, with lyrics describing the undeniable feelings you get when finding a partner in life. Moving to a half time feel in the chorus nicely accompanies the song, slowing down the movement to sit perfectly with the lyrical content. The message is uplifting and true to the human form.

"Celebrate we will, 'cause life is short but sweet for certain. We climb on two by two, to be sure these days continue. Things we cannot change."

Dave always has a unique way to describe situations, feelings, and is a phenomenal storyteller. In my opinion he is one of the best poets our generation will know. His lyrics connect to his audience with clarity and emotion. People are able to understand and relate to his words, but also contemplate and speculate what certain phrases pertain to, in the song and perhaps their own life.

This is surely a staple in any DMB's listener's library.
