"Grey Street" - DMB - Song of the Week #10

"Grey Street"

There comes a time in everyone's life where the world feels to be mixed and matched in all the wrong ways. An estimated 1 in 10 adults in America deal with anxiety and depression on a daily basis. This story song describes the feeling of being lost in your own life. When all of the hopes you have had for yourself seem so far away, and nothing but emptiness fills your insides. Although you try and try to pull yourself out of the depths, nothing seems to work.

"She thinks "Hey, how did I come to this? I dreamed myself a thousand times around the world, but I can't get out of this place."

Dave has done it again with the lyrical interpretation of this condition. I've yet to hear another artist quite as good at depicting a specific feeling, setting, and situation. The music is fully complimentary with it's endless riff, and slightly dark groove. During the verses you can really feel the sense of her wanting to move, but finding herself stuck in the riffing cycle. The chorus slowly but surely leads you to what feels like a positive climax, only when you get there, you feel the striking blow of her disappointment. It's as if you can actually sense her having hope, trying to move on, but ultimately finding herself hindered and heartbroken. Without this exact musical interpretation behind these lyrics, this song would not possess the extreme emotional power it does so well.

"There's an emptiness inside her, and she'd do anything to fill it in. And though it's red blood bleeding from her now, it's more cold blue ice in her heart. She feels like kicking out all the windows, and setting fire to this life. She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright, but all the colors mix together to grey. And it breaks her heart."

The main thing to remember is life has it's ups and downs. Tomorrow is directly ahead with the promise of a new start, and an opportunity to change the thinking process. The strength of the human mind is beyond extrordanary. Never doubt that you have the power to change the way you think, and who you are. You can be whatever you want to be in this life. For those of you suffering, never give up hope, and soon you will find yourself on an illuminated street with bright colors leading your way.
